Performing as a Pianist in Yorkshire
My name is Eugene Portman and I always enjoy being booked as a pianist in Yorkshire. This is partly because it gives me a chance to visit the county I was born in. Also, because there are so many beauty spots in the area. Surprisingly, Yorkshire is the home to Leeds International Piano Competition and yet there are very few professional pianists in the area. As a matter of fact, things have changed slightly over the years as Leeds College of Music has become more popular as a place to study. Every year music students coming from all over the UK graduate from the college and a small percentage decide to stay and settle in the area
I play the piano for quite a number of weddings and events in the Yorkshire area throughout the year. The county provides me with a lot of weddings to play for and it is also a good source of corporate events and private parties. These can be at any of the vast choice of venues that Yorkshire has. First of all, we have historic castles and stately homes such as York Castle, and Rudding Park near Harrogate. Then we have hotels and golf clubs such as Raven Hall Country House Hotel near Scarborough and Whitby Golf Club. I work as a pianist all over Yorkshire, but my main sources of work are Harrogate, York, Scarborough, Whitby, and Middlesbrough.
Here is just a selection of venues I’ve performed in around the area:
- Ripley Castle (East Wing), Harrogate,
- Orangery (The) at Sewerby Hall & Gardens, Church Lane, Sewerby, Bridlington
- Rudding Park, Follifoot, Harrogate
- Officer’s Mess, Alma Barracks, Catterick Garrison, Catterick, North Yorkshire
- Allerton Castle, Allerton Mauleverer
- Cruck Barn, Craven Arms, Appletreewick Skipton
- Sun Pavillion, Cornwall Road, Harrogate
- Hazlewood Castle, Hazlewood, Tadcaster, North Yorkshire
Yorkshire provides me with quite a lot of work as a solo pianist, but I can also offer other line ups. These include piano and bass; piano and vocals; piano, bass and drums; and loads of other combinations right up to a five-piece jazz band consisting of piano, bass, drums, vocals, and sax. Here is a full list of the line-ups I offer:
- Duo – piano and vocals or piano and bass
- Trio – piano, bass and vocals or piano, bass and drums
- Quartet – piano, bass, drums and vocals or piano, bass, drums and sax
- Five Piece Jazz Band – piano, bass, drums, sax and vocals
I was originally classically trained, but I now specialise in jazz, swing and blues. The sort of jazz I enjoy is the more mainstream type and is easy to listen to. This is music as performed by the likes of Oscar Peterson, Erroll Garner, Nat King Cole, and Ella Fitzgerald. Apart from the styles I’ve mentioned, I also play pop, rock, Latin, classical, and even sing-along.
I find that my varied repertoire and choice of line-ups allows me to provide music for any part of the wedding day. For example, at the beginning of the day I can play classical music for the ceremony on solo piano or you can have another style of music. Then you can have lively jazz and swing in the form of a jazz trio for the drinks reception. This can be followed with gentle rock and pop ballads played on solo piano during the wedding breakfast. You can then have a quartet or quintet playing lively jazz for the first part of the evening reception. To finish with you can put your own playlist through our PA system and enjoy dancing to your own disco at the end of the evening.
Playing for so many weddings means that I have to be versatile and I am always willing to learn any requests that you may have. Sometimes choosing music for a wedding can be daunting, but I am always on hand to help you with your music choices.
My Work as a Sing-along Pianist in Berkshire
A recent trend has led to me be booked as a sing-along pianist in Yorkshire. Furthermore, this has become popular for weddings and quite a few now have a singalong as part of the day. At the end of the wedding day, there is nothing like a good old Cockney knees up. This sort of thing isn’t to everyone’s taste, but they are really good fun and I really enjoy playing the piano for them. For these sessions, I supply all the song sheets so that all you have to provide is some good hearty voices and an element of enthusiasm. When I perform at a sing-along event I dress up in good old Cockney style with a Bowler hat, waistcoat, neckerchief, etc.
Also, please don’t just stay on this page. The rest of the site contains loads of different styles of piano music and does explain the different services that I can offer.
