My Work as a Pianist in Sussex
My name is Eugene Portman and Sussex provides me with a generous amount of work as a pianist throughout the year. A lot of my bookings consist of performing jazz, but an increasing number of them are as a solo classical pianist. This demand for me as a solo classical pianist has grown and has become something that I really enjoy. Sometimes this can be just a few classical pieces for a wedding ceremony. However, on other occasions it can be one or two hours of classical music for an art exhibition or musical soiree.
Sussex was my home for a number of years and I always enjoy playing the piano in this lovely county.
A lot of my work in Sussex consists of providing classical music as a wedding pianist. Other types of events mostly require music of other genres. The music I play ranges from Beethoven and Chopin through to Gershwin and Coldplay.
Although I do play music from many different styles, my true love lies in the music of the swing and jazz era. My influences are pianists like Oscar Peterson, George Shearing and Erroll Garner rather than the more modernists.
My Work as a Sing-along Pianist in Sussex
In Sussex, there has been a recent trend to book me as a sing-along pianist for events. This has even become incorporated into some of the weddings that I do. When I perform as a sing-along pianist I often dress as a Cockney pianist with a Bowler hat, grandad shirt, waistcoat, red neckerchief, etc. Please visit my sing-along page for more information about this. Also, please explore the rest of the site to gain an insight into the different styles of music that I play.
Sussex and Weddings
Being only a stone’s throw away from London means that this county very popular for civil partnerships and weddings. Sussex is often preferred by couples looking for more of a rural location rather than the hurly-burly of London venues. The many varied venues range from tithe barns on the South Downs to modern hotels in Brighton and Eastbourne.
Although I have played in many of the county’s venues I still keep coming across new ones. Most of my work in Sussex is as a wedding pianist, but I also provide music for many other tyes of events.

Here are a few venues in Sussex where I have performed:
Buxted Park Country House Hotel
Buxted Park Country House Hotel, Buxted, Uckfield, East Sussex.
This venue is extremely popular and I have played the piano here many times. They have a lovely white grand piano just as you enter the orangery. However, a pianist would need to take their own piano to play in any of the other rooms.
Hydro Hotel, Mount Road, Eastbourne, East Sussex.
The Hydro is a popular Sussex venue and I have worked as a pianist at this wonderful hotel many times. This is a very popular seaside venue for weddings and all other types of events. They have two pianos to my knowledge but I’ve only played one of them.
Ghyll Manor, High Street, Rusper, Horsham, West Sussex.
They did have a piano at this venue, but it has been a while since I played there. As with most venues, the piano is not always in the right location for your event.
East Court Mansion
East Court Mansion, East Court, College Lane, East Grinstead, West Sussex.
They have a piano at East Court Mansion which can be used for ceremonies and other small events. The adjoining Meridian Hall is where the larger functions take place and a digital piano is needed for this venue. I’ve performed here on a number of occasions and I always enjoy the panoramic view over the Ashdown Forest.
Alexander House Hotel,
Alexander House Hotel, Turners Hill, West Sussex.
This venue has one piano which is very playable. However, all the wedding ceremonies take place in the library which doesn’t have its own instrument. I am also often called upon to play the piano in the grounds of this lovely venue.
The George, 98 High St Rye, East Sussex.
I love this venue and I also love visiting Rye. The venue has no piano and I always have to take a digital piano when I play there. The venue is very chic and the decor is extremely tasteful.
Newick Park, Newick, Nr Lewes.
This is one of the more popular Sussex venues and I have played the piano there on quite a few occasions. They have a nice grand piano in one of the rooms which is a real pleasure to play. However, a pianist would need to take their own instrument if music is needed in another location.
I am available as a solo classical pianist in Sussex, Brighton, Eastbourne, Hastings, Chichester, Worthing, East Grinstead, Crawley, Bognor Regis, Horsham and other areas of the UK.
