Performing as a Pianist in Somerset
My name is Eugene Portman and I really enjoy visiting Somerset as a pianist. Furthermore, it is certainly an area that I enjoy visiting and I’m pleased that I get so much work in the area. I’ve played the piano in many of Somerset’s many and varied venues. These include The Royal Crescent Hotel and Wood’s Restaurant in Bath and The Mount Somerset Hotel and Spa and St. Audries Park near Taunton. I do know that there are quite a few good pianists in Somerset, so I always feel quite fortunate to be asked to play the piano there. Moreover, I look forward to every event and wedding I do in this lovely county.
I’m often hired as a solo pianist for weddings in the Somerset area and this means that I have to be versatile in the music I play. One of the things I’m often asked for is classical music for ceremonies. However, classical music isn’t all I perform. I also play music from many other genres and ranges from Bach and Einaudi through to Jerome Kern and The Bangles.
My specialty is in music from the jazz and swing era and this includes the songs of Cole Porter, Gershwin, and Jerome Kern. The music I play is reminiscent of an older style of jazz and consists of tunes we all know and love. My jazz piano style is melodic and has developed through listening to pianists such as Erroll Garner, George Shearing, and Dudley Moore.
My Work as a Sing-along Pianist in Somerset
A recent trend in Somerset has led to me being hired as a sing-along pianist for many events. I have decided to promote this a little bit more and I have compiled a number of song sheets. Here are a few venues in Somerset where I have performed:
Wood’s Restaurant, 9 – 13 Alfred street, Bath – A pianist regularly plays at Wood’ Restuarant and they have quite a nice grand piano. Fortunately the piano is kept in good working order. I’ve provided music for quite a few events here and I always look forward to playing the piano at Woods.
Halswell House, Halswell Park, Goathurst, Bridgwater – There’s a piano upstairs which is usually used for ceremonies, but I usually take a digital piano with me so that I can play in other parts of the venue.
Combe House Hotel, Holford – A wonderful venue in a really lovely setting. They usually have ceremonies and drinks receptions in the main building., while a large marquee is often used for large sit-down meals.
Hornsbury Mill, Eleighwater, Chard
Orchardleigh House, Orchardleigh Park, Frome – They have a piano on site which is usually used for ceremonies. I usually have to bring my own instrument so that I can play in other parts of the house. This venue seems to have quite a lot of events and weddings that require a pianist.
Priston Mill, Bath
St. Audries Park, West Quantoxhead, Taunton – a piano is on site, but I usually have to bring my own as music is often required in another part of the building.
Tone Dale House, Wellington – piano on site but it isn’t always in a convenieint spot for most events. It was broken the last time I played here so I had to use my own.
The Mount Somerset Hotel and Spa, Lower Henlade, Taunton – no piano here to my knowledge. I’ve always had to play in the same part of the venue and I have had to provide my own piano on each occasion.
The Royal Crescent, Bath, Somerset
