Cockney Sing-along Pianist - Essex, Sussex, Surrey, Kent, Hampshire, or Berkshire

Good Old Fashioned Pub Entertainment – The Way it Used to Be

A fairly recent trend has been to hire me for events as a sing-along pianist. A London pub was the first to hire me for this sort of thing – this was quickly followed by venues in Essex, Kent, Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire. At first I wasn’t that enthusiastic about doing sing-alongs, but after doing my first Cockney theme night in London I was hooked. It does require a different type of skill to my normal playing and I really have to try and help the singers come in at the right places and in the right key (if possible!). It would be useless just to bring a book of songs along and play from that – as most of them were published in keys which are difficult for the average person to sing. I’ve had to change the keys of nearly every song in my sing-along repertoire and I have really noticed that the singing now sounds more mellifluous and I hear a lot less screeching!

Cockney Singalong Pianist

Sing-a-long Pianists in the Past

There was a day when nearly every pub had a piano (or  ‘Joanna’) in it and everyone would get around it and sing all the old Cockney favourites. London pub pianists were renowned throughout the country and the East End was considered the Mecca for this style of entertainment. Although London seemed to have more pubs with pianists per square mile, the rest of the country also had their fair share of places where you could go and have a good sing-song. At one time sing-a-long pianists could be heard on the radio and entertainers such as Mrs Mills and Russ Conway were very successful in their day. Many people had a piano in their homes and before the days of TV everyone used to sing and play musical instruments. Yes, ‘they used to make their own entertainment then’ as you’ve probably heard many times.

Things Move On

These days we play with computers, game consoles and watch the telly, but there is still an angel in all of us that is just dying to get out and sing – especially when we’ve had a few drinks. Just look how many people are watching XFactor, and even Karaokes are still popular – especially in the north of England. The only problem with Karaokes is that the only person singing is the one on the microphone and usually that person is the only one enjoying it. An old fashioned sing-a-long allows everyone to sing at the same time and there is nothing like that sound of an honky-tonk pianist churning out those old songs. It doesn’t matter whether it’s Christmas or someone’s birthday – people like to have a sing-song especially with a pianist.

Hiring Me as a Sing-a-long Pianist

A pianist playing the old Cockney songs will always go down really well at a private party and it won’t take much organising. I can bring along some song sheets and we can just take it from there. My song sheets cover lots of genres besides all the Cockney favourites. I also play songs from the musicals, The Beatles, The Kinks, Cliff Richard, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and many other popular artists.

Here are the songs that are on the song sheets. However, the number of songs I play is forever increasing and I have to keep amending the song sheets.
